Don Rowlands Rowing Centre, Lake Karapiro, Waikato.
The Don Rowlands Centre is a new 2000m² multi-purpose community facility located at the centre of the Lake Karapiro Domain. It was designed and developed within the context of the local councils 10 year Reserve Management Plan and the subsequently successful bid for the rights to host the 2010 World Rowing Championships. The building is designed for use by the community and (sometimes commercial) lake and domain users, and includes a multi-purpose hall, two function rooms, a cultural room for the local Iwi, drug testing facilities and a commercial re-heat kitchen. A limited palette of high quality external materials and finishes was selected - precast concrete, honed concrete masonry block, cedar weatherboarding, and hot dipped galvanised metal work.
